About Commerce (International) with Irish, BComm International - at University College Cork (UCC)

Overview

Combining business subjects with the study of the Irish language, literature and culture, this degree equips you with the skills and knowledge to work in a fast-changing global business environment.

The BComm (International) with Irish provides you with an opportunity to not only learn about the dynamics of the relationship between business and language/culture, but also to learn practical skills for the work environment which enhance your academic development.

Year 3 of the course is spent either on work placement in a company in Ireland or studying in Scotland.

Year 3 Modules:

Students who go on placement will complete a work placement journal and written assignments in Irish and English and will give an oral presentation. Students who spend the year studying in Scotland will complete modules in their chosen university.

Costs: Full-time EU/EEA/Swiss State undergraduate students may be exempt from paying tuition fees. The State will pay the tuition fees for students who satisfy the Free Fees Criteria. In 2016/17 the Student Contribution Charge will be EUR 3,000 and the Capitation Fee will be EUR 165.

2017 Entry Requirements: H5 in two subjects, and O6/H7 in four other subjects in the Leaving Certificate from Irish, English, another language, Mathematics and two other subjects recognised for entry purposes. Special Entry Requirement: H3 in Irish.

Course Practicalities

Students will be required to attend lectures, tutorials and laboratory classes as prescribed for the language and business modules takes.

You will be required to attend one weekend course in a Gaeltacht area in Year 2. All of Year 3 is spent either on work placement in a company in Ireland or studying in a university in Scotland.

Students who complete their work placement in certain companies where the Irish language requirement is not catered for may be required to spend an additional period on an approved course in a Gaeltacht area.

Assessment

Written exams will take place before Christmas and in May. Not all modules will have formal examinations. Many modules use other types of assessment

Irish language modules are assessed by means of end-of-semester written examinations, oral examinations and continuous assessment of coursework.Irish subjects are taught and examined through the medium of Irish.

Business modules are assessed by means of end-of-semester written examinations and continuous assessment of coursework. Business subjects are studied and examined through the medium of English.

The Year 3 work placement is assessed by means ofattendance record, oral presentation and written assignments.

Application Procedure

EU applicants: Application to Year 1 of the degree programme is made directly through the Central Applications Office (CAO). Applicants should apply online at www.cao.ie. The normal closing date for receipt of completed applications is 1st February of the year of entry.

Non-EU Applicants.

Mature Applicants: Application is made through the CAO and the closing date for the receipt of completed applications is 1st February of the year of proposed entry.
